The Painters Project

FEMININE AESTHETICS SUBLIMATED BY ERIC CECCARINI

FEMININE AESTHETICS SUBLIMATED BY ERIC CECCARINI

We were privileged to attend the preview of an exhibition by Eric Ceccarini, a Belgian artist of Italian origin, world-renowned for his mastery of photography and his vibrant homage to feminine beauty.

Mastery of light and shapes

A graduate in photography from Brussels, Eric Ceccarini has been developing a unique style for over three decades, characterized by his masterful use of natural light. Today, he presents a series of works from his emblematic project, *The Painters Project*. The series features unprecedented collaborations between the photographer, a painter and a model, each work becoming the fruit of a creative symbiosis in which the body becomes an artistic medium in its own right.

Exploring the Art of Emotion

We were delighted by the subtlety and emotion emanating from each work exhibited in the two selected Brussels venues. On September 21, to coincide with the opening of the first exhibition at *inside_out* gallery (30 rue Van Eyck), the artist invited his guests to a brunch from 11am to 6pm. It was the perfect opportunity to discover, in an intimate setting, some twenty captivating works that explore the boundaries between photography and painting.

The first exhibition will run from September 21 to 22 at the *inside_out* gallery, 30 rue Van Eyck, 1000 Brussels. The second exhibition will run from September 25 to October 13 at the same gallery, this time at 132 rue Blaes, 1000 Brussels. Visitors will be able to admire these unique works from Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Redefining Beauty

Ceccarini's universe is a vibrant tribute to femininity, where every detail, every shadow and every gesture testify to a deep respect and fascination for the human body. Her soft, painterly images reveal an artisanal approach to light, giving her works an almost sculptural aura.

Through *The Painters Project*, the artist explores new aesthetic dimensions, where the meeting of painting and photography gives rise to creations of rare evocative power. Eric Ceccarini transcends genres, offering us a poetic and moving vision of contemporary art.

For all art lovers and visual creation enthusiasts, this double exhibition is a must-see. We invite you to discover these works which, under Ceccarini's expert eye, redefine the boundaries of beauty and artistic expression.

The Vault Art Gallery

A FRESH TWIST ON CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERIES

A FRESH TWIST ON CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERIES

Banking on Beauty

April 25, 2024 – Brussels. Picture this: Zishan Ansari, the creative mind behind Quintessentially, the ultra-chic private concierge service, decides to dive into the world of contemporary art by opening a gallery in a venue as iconic as the former ING bank building, nestled at Avenue Louise 205-207 in Brussels. And thus, The Vault is born, a new gallery pulsating with a fresh and contemporary approach to art. Inspired by the once-secretive safes that safeguarded financial mysteries, The Vault focuses on internationally renowned artists while offering the opportunity to rent their masterpieces. But wait, there's more: it also transforms into an exclusive setting for private dinners, boasting no fewer than 800 safes ready to be rented.

When asked what prompted him to transform this banking space into an artistic enclave, Zishan Ansari's answer is simple: he saw an opportunity. "After years of browsing galleries in New York, France, and London, I realized there was a wealth of international contemporary artists who had yet to find their place here in Belgium," he explains, adding with a hint of mischief, "And after all, what's more luxurious than art? It's the ultimate investment in refinement and pleasure."

The Vault retains the charm of the bank, with its vault room filled with mysteries and treasures. But what truly sets it apart is its perfect marriage of art and functionality. By renting out these safes, The Vault ensures a steady flow of visitors, thus offering unparalleled visibility to the artists and their works. And to top it all off, it becomes the ideal venue for exclusive gastronomic experiences thanks to Nest, another gem in the Quintessentially group.

From Vaults to Visions

Among the featured artists are names that resonate in the world of contemporary art: Jonty Hurwitz, the master of holographic illusions; David David, the French visionary with biting metaphors; Lis Sam, the Cannes artist who paints with flowers and butterflies; Jean-Paul Kala, inspired by the mechanics and enchanting landscapes of Congo; and last but not least, David Kracov, the Disney wizard whose steel wall sculptures light up gazes.

Rent, Enjoy, Own

But that's not all. In addition to traditional purchases, The Vault also offers the option to rent artworks. In partnership with Bail Art, clients can lease their favorites for a period ranging from 12 to 48 months, with a monthly rent deductible from taxes. And the cherry on top: at the end of the contract, they can even choose to acquire the artwork for a fraction of its value.

About Quintessentially Quintessentially is much more than just a private concierge service. Since its founding by Zishan Ansari in 2006, it has established itself as the indispensable accomplice of luxury and refinement. In addition to offering unique experiences around the world, Quintessentially simplifies its clients' lives by taking care of their every desire, from the most extravagant to the most mundane. Because at Quintessentially, luxury is second nature.

Fluid Current

SANDER HAGELAAR

SANDER HAGELAAR

Fluid Current is a dynamic installation in which water droplets complete the electric circuit and trigger lights to turn on.

A Symphony of Water's Dance

Within Sander Hagelaar's mesmerizing creation, Current Fluid Installation, water emerges as the protagonist in a kinetic symphony. This interactive installation orchestrates a captivating dance between water droplets and electric currents, challenging preconceived notions and inviting audiences to witness water's unexpected harmony with energy. Hagelaar, an artist and visionary, delves into uncharted territories, defying conventions and transforming mundane materials into vessels of wonder, all while embracing the intrinsic movements of the natural world. Through Current Fluid Installation, water transcends its conventional role, seamlessly integrating into electric circuits, as each droplet cascades along gleaming aluminum pathways, igniting a luminous azure glow upon contact.

Igniting Sparks: The Fusion of Water and Electricity

Current Fluid Installation heralds a paradigm shift in our perception of both water and electrical energy, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of these fundamental elements. Hagelaar's artistic ethos, steeped in conceptual exploration and experimentation, embarks on a journey where organic motions and materials converge in symbiotic harmony. By cultivating environments that nurture spontaneous occurrences, Hagelaar embraces the serendipitous outcomes, fostering an experience that resonates universally, transcending age and societal boundaries.

A Visual Symphony

At the heart of Hagelaar's conceptual framework lies a profound integration of physics into the essence of 'living' creations. His installations, teeming with kinetic energy or choreographed chemical reactions, serve as conduits for shared encounters, celebrating the allure of chance and the allure of unexpected phenomena. Enigmatic forces such as light, gravity, and air intertwine seamlessly within Hagelaar's narrative, enriching the sensory tapestry woven within his immersive installations.

In the ethereal realm of Current Fluid Installation, Hagelaar unveils a tableau vivant, where water and electricity engage in a sublime pas de deux. Each droplet, a transient conduit of energy, traces an ephemeral path along meticulously crafted aluminum conduits, culminating in a crescendo of illumination as it makes contact with the luminous azure bulb. Here, water defies its traditional dichotomy with electricity, seamlessly melding into the electric circuitry, embodying a harmonious coalescence of seemingly disparate elements.

Through Current Fluid Installation, Hagelaar beckons us to embark on a voyage of discovery, where the boundaries between art and science blur, and the ordinary transcends into the extraordinary. In the fluid currents of his creation, we find not only a celebration of innovation but also an invitation to perceive the world through a lens of wonder and possibility.

Teresa Bracamonte

“I AM YOUR FANTASY”

“I AM YOUR FANTASY”

From Runway to Reality

Teresa Bracamonte, an artist hailing from Peru who has been residing in Paris since 2017, embarked on a modeling career in Lima from the age of 18 to 26. While immersed in the world of beauty standards and the commercial use of her image, she made the decision to "play the game" in order to fund her artistic endeavors.

Eventually, she decided to leave the world of fashion behind and fully commit herself to photography. Armed with her camera, she ventured into different realities, particularly the marginalized communities of Lima, where she captured images of transsexuals, marginalized individuals, and the world of prostitution. This artistic approach was a part of her ongoing quest for identity and the reclamation of her own body and image.

In 2020, Teresa began creating portraits of nude women and gradually pushed the boundaries of self-portraiture. In 2022, she created a series of self-portraits that are both captivating and unsettling in their sensuality and underlying violence. In these works, she embodies the sensuality that men dream of and draws them into a sweet yet dangerous reverie.

Seductive Brushstrokes

As a body painter, Teresa uses bold and expressive brushstrokes, and her contrasting chiaroscuro compositions intentionally leave the sketch visible on reclaimed wooden boards and canvas. Her portraits and self-portraits often feature slightly larger-than-life bodies, conveying a complex sense of provocation and desire, challenging the viewer with their direct gazes.

Her paintings may appear unfinished, with vibrant brushstrokes that mirror the symbolic female figures she embodies – femmes fatales, saints, prostitutes, BDSM personas, erotica, and elements of pornography. These bodies in provocative states evolve, transform, reveal themselves, and then conceal, leaving desire awakened.

For her exhibition 'I am your Fantasy,' Teresa creates a neon installation that features a bold phrase in luminous red, handcrafted by the artist herself. This phrase evokes the red neon signs that mark areas associated with sexual exploitation. It serves as a call for emancipation, encouraging women to react and regain ownership of their bodies, images, and lives.

Teresa Bracamonte's art delves into the history of femininity and questions the role of women in society through their representation. It challenges the mechanisms of a male-dominated society where women may be consciously or unconsciously subjected to perverse systems of reward and punishment, love, or rejection.

In her latest series of photographic self-portraits, created specifically for this exhibition, Teresa transforms her face into ten different variations of inflatable dolls. In this stark and unsettling portrayal of an object widely used for mass sexual consumption, she takes the concept of the woman as an object to an extreme level.

For Teresa Bracamonte, seduction, rather than mere provocation, becomes a means of communication and inquiry, ultimately forging a subtle and sensual connection with the audience.

I AM YOUR FANTASY

How far can we go in distancing ourselves from our true selves to fulfill someone else's desires? "I am your fantasy" represents an artistic exploration of women portrayed as objects of desire. The aim is to provoke questions about female identity as a construct molded by the male perspective, shedding light on the objectification, sexualization, and hypersexualization of women.

In today's Western society, where the influence of patriarchy still lingers, we are conditioned from a young age to seek approval and conform to male expectations. Inevitably, we find ourselves entangled in this societal system, compelled to "play the game" in order to survive.

We consciously or unconsciously shape our identity as a survival strategy, often choosing to present ourselves as objects of desire. Seduction, in this context, becomes a double-edged sword, an additional tool that can either emancipate us or, conversely, lead us astray into the fantasies of others.

Do women, who have grown accustomed to constant scrutiny, even in their most vulnerable moments, continue to wear the masks assigned to them by society?

This exhibition documents my personal journey of self-discovery and evolution as a female artist over the past few years, captured through the mediums of photography and painting. Self-portraiture, for me, has evolved into a means of empowerment, allowing me to assert myself and explore subjects that are both universal and deeply personal.

In the universal quest for acceptance and belonging, driven by a desire to please and be loved, we often lose touch with our authentic selves in favor of projecting an image that pleases others.

To what extent do we ultimately distance ourselves and lose our true identity, which morphs into a fiction or an illusion? Do we forget who we are or who we truly aspire to be, becoming mere embodiments of someone else's fantasies?

EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC ALCHEMY OF OPPOSITES

EXPLORING THE ARTISTIC ALCHEMY OF OPPOSITES

A Minimalits Creative Odyssey

Paul Bik, an artist born in Warsaw and based in Milan, believes that an artist's personality and life experiences are inherent in their work, whether it's in the inspiration or the tangible representation. He finds inspiration in the combination of opposites, and his art reflects the harmony between contrasting elements such as geometry and distortion, precision and intuition, and traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques. Despite working primarily with wood, cardboard, resin, plaster, and paint, he cannot easily classify his works as either sculpture or painting, as both processes are equally essential to him.

Paul's artistic journey began later in life, and he pursued various career paths, including psychology, fashion, makeup artistry, streetwear jewelry design, and interior design before dedicating himself to art. Moving to Milan marked a turning point, allowing him to embrace his passion for art. His work reflects his constant search for balance, which mirrors the clash between his introverted and extroverted qualities.

Harmony in Contrast

Paul's art is characterized by its organic nature, rejecting predictability and perfection in favor of a harmonious blend of opposing forces. He draws inspiration from objects and crafts created with human labor and traditional tools, seeking ideas and energy in art galleries rather than nature.

His upcoming exhibition in Madrid, titled "Extruded Canvas," showcases his evolving technique, with a greater emphasis on painting and subtle touches of color, breaking away from his characteristic monochromatic palette. Paul Bik's art is a deeply personal exploration of his own personality and a reflection of the balance between introversion and extroversion.

Paul Bik's art is a reflection of his true self, a testament to the enduring power of balance and unity in the world of contemporary art.

MISTER SAND CASTLES

MISTER SAND CASTLES

Architectural Alchemy

The artist Calvin Seibert is known for his impressive sand castles, which perfectly embody his passion for architecture, as the title suggests. After studying at the School of Visual Arts, Seibert began sculpting clean-lined modernist buildings and varied geometric shapes from sand, creating works more reminiscent of Brutalist architecture than the traditional sandcastles of our childhood.

This passionate lover of architecture brilliantly transposes his craft into his sand sculptures. The influence of his field of expertise is immediately apparent in his intricately geometric sandcastles.

From Fascist Symmetry to Playful Brutalism

Four decades ago, his castles were almost "fascist" in their Art Deco aesthetic, characterized by rigorous symmetry and exacting complexity. Today, his work has softened and taken on a playful dimension, while retaining elements of Brutalism, notably through the use of sand color and clean contours. However, it's essential to remember that these castles are not scale models of real buildings. Their ephemeral nature also places them in artistic currents such as Conceptualism, Arte Povera or Earth Art.

Calvin Seibert has even collaborated with Hermès on a photo shoot in Cap Ferret. Such projects have taught him the difficulty of meeting all expectations, given the many unpredictable elements involved, not least the vagaries of the weather. Nevertheless, he continues to receive offers to exhibit his talent, whether in Italy or Saudi Arabia.

KINETIC BLANKETS ART INSTALLATION IN CHENGDU

Reveal of a Kinetic Blankets Art Installation in Chengdu

A Monumental Masterpiece in Chengdu

"Spanish artist SpY's latest kinetic installation, 'Blankets,' makes its debut in Chengdu, China, at the prestigious Times Art Museum. This captivating project utilizes real-life elements to craft a mesmerizing dance of movement, light, and sound. SpY orchestrated hundreds of emergency blankets into an ongoing choreography, resulting in a dazzling spectacle that shimmers and sways against an all-white canvas. The ever-changing patterns and the distant ocean-like soundscapes created by this installation redefine the viewer's experience.

Blankets' Kinetic Installation

By reshaping these objects, often laden with symbolic meaning, the artist challenges our expectations and the conventional interpretations of these items. The result is an ever-evolving visual journey that invites viewers to explore the installation from various angles, revealing either the golden or silver sides of the blankets. This monumental masterpiece, showcased at the Times Art Museum in Chengdu, China, is a part of the exhibition 'A Momentary Spring.

Sho Shibuya

SOLO SHOW WITH UNIT LONDON

SOLO SHOW WITH UNIT LONDON

The New-York Time as canvas

Unit London presents Sho Shibuya’s first solo show with the gallery on July 25th. The exhibition titled Month explores our perceptions of time through painting as a daily ritual. It includes thirty paintings and one sculpture which also comprises thirty paintings. Using the New York Times as his canvas, the Brooklyn-based artist paints a sunrise on each newspaper’s front cover, preserving the lifecycle of the news, whether devastating or uplifting.

Chronicles of Time

Sho Shibuya is a Japanese artist, graphic, designer, and founder of the creative studio Placeholder living in Brooklyn, New York. His work is primarily concerned with exploring the concept of time and creating a visual, emotional record, and the paintings have been exhibited at the Triennale Milano, at Art Basel Miami Beach in collaboration with Saint Laurent, and the Momu Fashion Museum, among others. The Sunrise from a Small Window series is Shibuya’s most characteristic work, which began as a daily meditation on the contrast between the steady morning sky and the increasingly chaotic news. The paintings in Month are Sho Shibuya’s visual diary from January to May 2023. Drawing inspiration from On Kawara’s practice of capturing time, the artist shows various ways a single day can be  perceived: it can feel long, or monumental, or simply unremarkable.

Brushstrokes of Change

Shibuya uses acrylic paint to render the sunrise before finishing the piece with a deacidification spray to prevent the paper from yellowing. Often, he covers the whole front page in gradations of colour. Until the death of George Floyd, Shibuya’s paintings would only depict sunrises. Since then, he sometimes lets his work reveal his emotions about certain news stories. Sometimes, for significant events such as the US election results or the invasion of Ukraine, Sho Shibuya leaves the New York Times’ headline uncovered.

“I am very good at continuing things. The SUNRISE FROM A SMALL WINDOW painting series began as a simple meditation, born out of a feeling of restlessness and an observation of the contrast between the chaos in the news and the natural calm outside my window, and it evolved from there as I continued to paint and explore my emotions and reactions to the news. In this sense, the project is never finished.

The pandemic was the spark that started this series, but it has grown beyond any single theme. It is not about the news or about the sunrise. The series is united by practice, by routine, and by my personal experience. When I describe it as meditative, that is what I mean: it is a method of reflecting on my feelings and sharing them with the world. It is my visual diary, my reaction to the day, captured in color rather than language. I’ve found that painting is the best way for me to communicate my emotions, to interact with the world. And so, I will continue. »

SUSPENDED METAL SEATS

BREATHING LIFE INTO STILLNESS WITH METAL SCULPTURES

Daphné Keraudren, a visionary architect of French-Greek descent, defies traditional notions of art and architecture with her striking metal hanging seating structures. Vibrant sculptures crafted by her grace public spaces, museums, and private collections, delving into the aspects of architecture that are often overlooked, forbidden, or dismissed due to their social, economic, and political contexts. In her latest creation, "Playground," she suspended yellow metal seats from the grand balconies of Brussels Courthouse's interior, offering people a fresh perspective to experience the building's architecture.

Keraudren is renowned for her innovative approach to sculptural design, particularly in the realm of metalwork. She fearlessly explores the raw, rugged beauty of metals, experimenting with a diverse range of techniques, from traditional blacksmithing to cutting-edge technologies like laser cutting and 3D printing. Her work stands out for its ability to infuse life and movement into static metal, resulting in sculptures that defy gravity and flow with organic fluidity. Each piece tells a unique story, taking viewers on a captivating visual journey filled with profound emotions and thought-provoking ideas.

In a previous collaboration with Ateliers J&J, the architect beautifully combined her project "Use at your own risk" (2021) with the production system of the Ateliers. The versatile design of these pieces allows them to harmoniously fit both private and public outdoor settings, blending expert craftsmanship with in-situ adaptability concerning functionality and typology. Describing her "Use at your own risk" collection, Keraudren elucidates, "They offer a fresh perspective on the city and its usage, prompting contemplation on the appropriation of public space and addressing various legal and urban planning matters. Each object, suspended from Amsterdam's existing infrastructure, signifies a negotiation between the self and the other, the public and the private, and the outside and the inside."

Kim Simonsson

THE ENIGMATIC WORLD OF MOSS PEOPLE

THE ENIGMATIC WORLD OF MOSS PEOPLE

Ode to Finnish Folklore and Apocalyptic Symbolism

The convergence of Finnish folklore, apocalyptic themes, and the narrative elements of William Golding's classic novel "Lord of the Flies" may seem like an unlikely fusion. However, for the highly imaginative artist and innovative ceramist Kim Simonsson, this amalgamation has birthed a hauntingly beautiful sculpture series known as "Moss People." Crafted with meticulous attention to detail in glazed stoneware, Simonsson's life-size moss-green children captivate viewers with their deceptively innocent appearance, concealing a disconcerting sensibility upon closer inspection. Combining elements of verisimilitude and meta-narrative symbolism, the Moss People have garnered significant attention through solo gallery shows and installations, immersing audiences in their post-apocalyptic world where nature has triumphed.

The Rise of Moss People:

The Rise of Moss People: The Moss People have made a resounding impact on the art scene, with two solo gallery shows and three major installations in the past year alone. Their imposing presence was witnessed earlier this year as colossal figures in a monumental public installation at the French triennial arts and culture fair, lille3000, themed "UTOPIA." Subsequently, they embarked on a journey to Lyon for the 16th Lyon Biennale, captivating visitors with their enigmatic allure. Most recently, the Moss People took center stage at Design Miami 2022, courtesy of Jason Jacques Gallery's booth. Here, an innovative two-storey installation by Urban Umbrella allowed viewers to step inside Simonsson's captivating universe, showcasing a combination of his recent works alongside a never-before-seen Moss Giant.

Unraveling the Mystery

Wrapped in both mystery and allegory, the Moss People, primarily composed of children, raise numerous questions. Where did they originate? Did they form a cohesive group that dissolved due to internal conflicts, or did they grow up in solitude, navigating a hostile environment individually? Could they have been raised by animals or perhaps by adults who have since perished? Simonsson, more of a documentarian than a historian, intentionally leaves these questions unanswered, chronicling the coping mechanisms of each individual in a world devastated by disaster.

Diverse Yet Camouflaged:

Despite their similar color and size, the Moss Children encompass a diverse array of individuals. From the sedentary "Resting Giant Girl" exhibited at Design Miami to authoritative figures such as "The Doctor," "Kindergarten Teacher," "Musician," "Botanist," and "Astronaut in Camouflage," each sculpture hints at a unique backstory and rites of passage. Symbolic figures like "Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc)" and "Good Shepherd" add another layer of meaning to the series. Notably, all Moss Children possess an innate talent for camouflage, seamlessly blending into their natural surroundings. Simonsson emphasizes how the moss green figures merge with the environment, much like a protective carpet covering the ground, rocks, and tree trunks.

Blending Myth, Pop Culture, and Childhood

Drawing inspiration from Finnish folklore, Simonsson's fairy tale creatures bear references to pop culture, science fiction, consumerism, and children's games. From their poses and outfits to the found objects incorporated into the stonework, Moss Children possess a symbolic visual language that facilitates communication among themselves. Simultaneously, their enigmatic semiology bestows the series with a narrative complexity and elusive meaning, capturing the viewers' imaginations and inviting them to interpret the sculptures through their own lens.

An Artistic Alchemy

Simonsson's technique merges sculptural ceramics with industrial fabrication methods, resulting in a visually stunning and intricate art form. Each figure undergoes meticulous hand-sculpting using stoneware clay, fired to 1,200 degrees Celsius, before being adorned with epoxy and nylon flocking, creating a mesmerizing texture. The plant-like quality of the moss texture emerged serendipitously as Simonsson experimented with various combinations of nylon fibers. The captivating hyper-saturated green coloration was also a fortuitous accident, a combination of neon yellow flock and a black background that perfectly complemented the artist's vision for his fairy tale creatures.

Eternal Reflections

Whether experienced through immersive installations or viewed amidst the Finnish countryside, as evocatively captured by photographer Jefunne Gimpel, the Moss Children strike a chord within viewers. In their melancholic yet unyielding nature, their destitution juxtaposed with resourcefulness, and their solitary existence devoid of loneliness, they speak to our existential angst, fears of ecological catastrophe, and evoke our inner child. The enigmatic world of Moss People serves as an artistic reflection of our collective consciousness, provoking contemplation and stirring emotions that transcend the boundaries of time and place.

Visual Language

Kim Simonsson's Moss People series delves into the intersection of Finnish folklore, apocalyptic symbolism, and the imaginative world of William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." With their eerie allure and thought-provoking narratives, these life-size moss-green sculptures have captured the attention of art enthusiasts worldwide. Simonsson's meticulous craftsmanship and incorporation of diverse influences create a visual language that resonates with viewers, inviting them to explore the complexities of the post-apocalyptic world inhabited by the Moss Children. As they blend seamlessly into their surroundings, these enigmatic figures blur the lines between reality and imagination, leaving an indelible impression on those who encounter them, forever sparking contemplation about the human condition and the fragile relationship between nature and civilization.

SHIRIN ABEDINIRAD

Exploring Self, Identity, and Nature through Art

Exploring Self, Identity, and Nature through Art

Unleashing the Power of Art through Earthly Installations

Shirin Abedinirad, an Iranian artist born in Tabriz in 1986, has been making waves in the art world with her thought-provoking works. Abedinirad's artistic journey began in 2002 when she delved into painting, and from there, her passion for art only grew stronger.

After completing her academic studies in Graphic Design, Abedinirad pursued Fashion Design at Shariaty Technical College in Tehran. It was during her time there that she developed a keen interest in conceptual art and its intersection with fashion design. This fascination led her to explore performance art, where she tackled important societal issues such as gender, sexuality, and human compassion. Through her performances and public shows, Abedinirad fearlessly addressed these topics, using her art as a medium for social commentary.

In 2012, Abedinirad ventured into the realm of video art, exploring the concept of self and identity through moving images. Both in her performance art projects and videos, Abedinirad took on the roles of performer and designer, creating her own costumes, props, and sets. This multidisciplinary approach allowed her to fully immerse herself in her artistic expression, leaving a profound impact on viewers.

VISUAL EXPRESSION

As her artistic journey progressed, Abedinirad found herself increasingly drawn to nature as a central theme. In 2013, she embarked on creating land art, installation projects, and public art that incorporated imagery inspired by the natural world. Her unique approach to blending nature with art captivated audiences and brought her widespread recognition. In March 2014, Abedinirad's talent was recognized when she was awarded a one-year scholarship with United Colors of Benetton's prestigious Fabrica research center in Italy. During her time at Fabrica, Abedinirad worked in the Editorial Department and even published a book titled "Fashion & Conceptual Art" in collaboration with Nazar Publication. This publication further showcased her innovative ideas and artistic vision to a wider audience.

Abedinirad's artworks have been exhibited in numerous international festivals, biennials, and exhibitions across the globe. Currently based in the United States, she continues to create captivating performance art, installation pieces, and video projects. Her artistry transcends borders and resonates with viewers worldwide, leaving a lasting impression.

Shirin Abedinirad's dedication to exploring self, identity, and nature through art has firmly established her as a rising star in the contemporary art scene. With each new project, she challenges conventions and pushes boundaries, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of the human experience. As she continues to evolve as an artist, we eagerly anticipate the captivating works that Abedinirad will unveil in the future.

Dilemma

"Dilemma" is an impactful land art project installed in Iran that explores the tension between ascending to the sky and embracing lightness or descending to the ground and confronting darkness. Against the backdrop of the current situation in the country, the artist expresses the feeling of being trapped in a dilemma that necessitates making significant choices. Through this thought-provoking pathway, the artist aspires to guide society towards a path illuminated by light and hope.

Collective Reflection

“You are a volume in a divine book.

A mirror to the power that created the universe

whatever you want, ask it, of yourself,

whatever you’re looking for can only be found

Inside of you.”

Rumi (1207-1273)

REVISION

"Revision" is a visionary installation that consists of mirrored retro television sets arranged in the shape of a Ziggurat. Located on an isthmus at the mouth of the Erskine River, the installation reflects the surrounding nature and the movements of people who visit the site. Abedinirad invites audiences to experience nature in a new way, breaking away from the uncertainties of TV news and embracing the beauty of reality. Through the simple act of reflection, the installation creates a live movie that captures the essence of everyone and everything around it, highlighting the power of art to reveal the soul.

TIDE

Tide is a conceptual art piece influenced by the Persian poet Attar's work, Mantiq al-Tayr. It draws inspiration from the seven steps of mysticism described in the book, symbolizing the journey of self-realization. The installation features a wooden door partially buried in the sand, with a mirror inside reflecting both the sea and the viewers standing before it. Through metaphor and reflection, Tide invites contemplation on the search for truth and personal transformation.

EVOCATION

In the art installation "Evocation," Shirin addresses a significant challenge of living in the desert: the scarcity of water. Displayed in Iran Central Desert in 2013, this land art piece utilizes mirrors to create the illusion of refreshing blue pools amidst the sandy landscape. It is a mesmerizing mirage in the desert, as the mirrored circles, partly concealed by the golden sand, initially appear to be small ponds. It is only upon closer observation that we realize they are actually reflections of the sky across the dunes. By distorting our perception of nature and presenting a deceptive narrative, the artwork questions the connection between the human mind and the essential elements of the natural world.

Mirror of the Heart #2

The door serves as more than just an entrance. It prompts us to pause and reflect on our past actions and behaviors. When we face the door, we see ourselves and the landscape behind us—a reflection of our recent experiences that we may have overlooked. This confronting reality encourages us to contemplate our journey through life and opens the door to the possibility of change. The installation also incorporates audience participation, with the last five photos showcasing visitors' experiences at the Andorra Land Art Biennale, adding a personal touch to the artistic exploration.

Liminal

There have been moments in my life when I have felt immobilized between the two paths, and I don’t know which way to take. Living far from my homeland deeply affected my soul and I feel I am living in a liminal situation which I hope is conveyed in this work.

THE BABEL TOWER

The Tower of Babel story depicts a time when humanity shared a common language and lived together without boundaries. However, their pride and power concerned the Lord, leading to the dispersion of languages and the loss of understanding among people. Babel Tower, an interactive installation, merges the ancient spiritual architecture with modern materials, bridging the gap between past and present. By reflecting the sky and symbolizing the tower's aspiration to reach the heavens, it connects earth and sky. The use of mirrors in the structure enhances its luminosity and represents a glimpse of paradise. Whether placed in a city or natural environment, the installation responds to audience interaction or weather conditions, transforming the world and unifying human, city, and nature. Through movement, it captures the essence of the entire world in one piece, offering a transformative experience and dialogue with the surrounding environment.

Luminescence

Luminescence
By Christy Lee Rogers

By Christy Lee Rogers

Sony World Open Award Winning photographer and visual artist Christy Lee Rogers has released a new collection of underwater photographs titled "Luminescence" which have a strong resemblance to paintings from the 16th century.

Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist specializing in underwater photography and videos, known for using Chiaroscuro lighting in her works, and is often compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio. In 2019 she won Open Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards. She is a two-time finalist for the Contemporary Talents Award from the Foundation François Schneider in France, and was commissioned by Apple to create underwater images with the iPhone 11Pro, as well as being featured in their behind-the-scenes process films. Rogers' art has been featured on several album covers, including “Orchesography” for the 80’s band Wang Chung, and her images were selected for the 2013–2014 performance season of the Angers-Nantes Opera in France. In 2020 she created the cover image for the 2021 Lavazza Calendar ‘The New Humanity.’

Christy uses Baroque elements as a way of expressing "the power and beauty of the human form," portraying the human body in ways that are both sensual and powerful. Her use of the Baroque style adds a theatrical quality to her work, creating images that feel both timeless and modern. Luminescence was created using models submerged in water and extreme lighting in order to evoke dramatic and ethereal scenes, and the illusion of space and gravity-defying movements.

The Baroque style originated in 17th century Italy and is characterized by dramatic lighting, intense emotions, and grandeur which Rogers uses to create images that evoke a sense of tension and drama. The use of water as a setting also adds to the mystical and dreamlike quality of her imagery. Using multiple layers of light and dark water, she creates abstract and dreamlike imagery that is reminiscent of classical paintings, with water as a medium to convey emotional and symbolic meaning in her images.

In physics, Luminescence is the ability of certain objects to generate light through the excited state of its atoms when exposed to frequencies like ultraviolet light – which Christy is using as a metaphor for our own ability, when we concentrate on the positive, to create energy that lifts the world around us. Via her new series, which uses deep, pitch black pools with models intensely illuminated by high powered under-water spot lights, Christy hopes to shine a light into the darkest depths of our consciousness to excite the urge for us to generate our own form of Luminescence.

Light has captivated humanity since time immemorial, and has often been associated with spiritual freedom, health, healing and goodness; it is responsible for the creation of life on our planet through photosynthesis so the transport of energy by light plays a critical role in life itself.

Christy explores the idea that light surrounds the human body but is invisible to the eye, just like many wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. Beyond light, she examines the idea of other life forms in a science fiction type of reality, where in some images, splashes of color create nondescript forms, in weightless spaces.

Pierre-Louis Graizon

The man behind the mask

The man behind the mask

Pierre-Louis Graizon was born in Montpellier in 1992. He graduated with honours from ESBAMA in 2013, and obtained his master's degree at les Beaux Arts de Nantes with congratulations of the jury in 2015. He obtained his master's degree from the Accessories master at La Cambre in 2018 and is currently living and working in Bruxelles.

His work tends to question the role of distinction in the constitution of one’s identity nowadays,  the ambivalence of this quest for exception in a globalized society, as well as the consequences for a mediatically exposed and staged individual life.

Desire to create

In the realm of artistic expression, Pierre-Louis Graizon stands as a master of transformation. Hailing from France and now based in Brussels, his creative journey has led him to craft intricate masks that transcend the boundaries of mere accessories. With hat-making techniques and felt as his chosen medium, Graizon delves into the realm of identities, exploring the intricate dance between the "social self" and the "natural self." Sublime Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with this enigmatic artist to uncover the inspirations and revelations that drive his remarkable creations. Graizon's artistic path unfolded organically after completing his studies. Fuelled by an insatiable desire to create, he established his own workshop, a sacred space where his imagination could run wild and his artistic vision could take shape. Surrounded by an array of materials, objects, and ongoing projects, he delved deep into the realm of masks, discovering a profound connection to felt—an ideal medium for his artistic exploration.

The interplay between different versions of the self

"I realized that this material is the perfect medium for my artistic research because it allows me to express myself in the most natural way," Graizon explains. His masks transcend mere physical objects; they embody potential identities, narratives that may have unfolded or could come to life. Influenced by personal experiences, both struggles and triumphs, his work encapsulates a deep reflection on the construction of identity, exploring the interplay between different versions of the self.

When delving into the artistic process, one might expect Graizon to sketch out his designs meticulously. However, he shatters this preconception, revealing that he relies solely on mental images when crafting his masterpieces. "People are usually very surprised when they learn that I almost never draw," he admits. By directly translating his mental visions into tangible objects, he forges an intimate connection with the materials, immersing himself fully in the creative process. The result is a collection of masks that possess an ethereal quality, infused with the essence of the artist's imagination.

“No Time to Die”

For Pierre-Louis Graizon, the essence of craftsmanship extends beyond technical excellence; it encompasses durability, savoir-faire, and the ability to evoke a profound emotional response. His creations are not about attaining a rigid notion of perfection but rather about the stories they carry and the emotions they provoke. Each mask becomes a vessel of expression, a conduit for the exploration of diverse identities and the human experience itself.

Throughout his career, Pierre-Louis Graizon has had numerous memorable moments, but one particular highlight stands out—a surreal realization of his artistic journey. Two of his masks have found their place on the set of the recent James Bond film, 'No Time to Die.' It is an awe-inspiring experience for Graizon, who grew up watching these iconic movies. Seeing his creations become part of the world that has captivated him since childhood is nothing short of extraordinary.

Pierre-Louis Graizon, the visionary artist behind the masks, continues to captivate with his evocative creations. Through his exploration of identities, he invites us to question the masks we wear in our own lives and the intricate dance between our social personas and our true selves. As he crafts each mask with care and intention, Graizon invites us into a world where imagination reigns supreme, reminding us of the transformative power of art and the boundless possibilities that lie within the realm of masks as identities.
