Revival of Maison Hannon

A New House-Museum Dedicated to Art Nouveau in Saint-Gilles, Brussels

For ‘Art Nouveau’ Lovers

Great news for Belgian and international Art Nouveau enthusiasts: starting from June 1, 2023, the legendary Maison Hannon, located at the intersection of Avenue Brugmann and Avenue de la Jonction in Saint-Gilles, is reborn as a "house-museum" under the name Maison Hannon. This new Art Nouveau architectural and museum hub complements the Horta Museum and enhances the cultural and tourist offerings of the neighborhood. The project is a significant public-private partnership involving various organizations and institutions, including the Municipality of Saint-Gilles, the Brussels-Capital Region, the St'Art Invest fund, the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, and others.

The initial phase of restoration focused on the ground floor, faithfully recreating the Hannon family's universe and their original living spaces. The façade has also been restored. Maison Hannon aims to provide insight into the iconic Art Nouveau style invented in Brussels and plans to involve the public through conferences, visits, encounters with artisans, and crowdfunding campaigns in future restoration phases.

The first floor of Maison Hannon will host temporary exhibitions. The inaugural exhibition, titled "Belgian New Art(s): Van de Velde, Serrurier-Bovy, Hankar... & Co.", showcases the plurality of Belgian Art Nouveau, featuring works from both public and private collections. Curated by Werner Adriaenssens, the exhibition catalogue will be published in three languages.

Maison Hannon also presents a unique reconstruction on the ground floor in collaboration with the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims, the Museum of the School of Nancy, and private collectors. Through extensive research and restoration, the historical site is faithfully restored to its original state, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the Hannon family and understand their home. The scenography, designed by architect Aslı Çiçek, respects the house while incorporating contemporary elements, providing a sophisticated backdrop for the displayed objects.

The appointment of Aslı Çiçek as the architect was made with the support of the architecture unit of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels. Maison Hannon represents a new gem in Brussels' heritage and adds to the city's cultural legacy.
