Hotel Fleur de Ville

BRUSSELS’ CHIC NEW GEM UNVEILED

BRUSSELS’ CHIC NEW GEM UNVEILED

Where History and Luxury Meet

A new must-see address will light up the vibrant heart of Brussels from next June. The Hôtel Fleur de Ville, nestled in a former bank building, has been reinvented as a sumptuous boutique hotel, combining a cinematic aesthetic with retro design. A veritable showcase where every corner tells an extraordinary story, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

A revitalized historical treasure

Housed in an emblematic building, the Hôtel Fleur de Ville reveals a fascinating page from Brussels' financial past. Erected in 1889 by eclectic architect Hendrik Beyaert, and later embellished by Henri van Dievoet and Alban Chambon, famous for their sumptuous interiors, this monument has housed prestigious financial institutions. Today, its majestic architecture and historical details make it an invaluable place of remembrance.

An Immersion in the Past with a Modern Touch

The hotel's interior design pays homage to its rich past while embracing modernity with elegance. “It's like being in a Hercule Poirot movie,” enthuses Philippe Delissus, the hotel's director. “The elegance and intellect of the famous detective can be found in every nook and cranny, offering guests an immersive cinematic experience.” Interior designer Saar Zafrir adds, “We sought to offer a captivating artistic journey, incorporating authentic elements to celebrate the history and significance of this unique building.”

An Oasis of Refinement

The hotel offers 51 tastefully decorated rooms and suites, where Aesop luxury products ensure absolute relaxation. The Bluebell rooms, bathed in natural light thanks to their large windows overlooking the interior garden, and the Iris rooms, offering views of the city's bustling streets, feature authentic details such as fireplaces and original moldings. The four luxury suites, including the sumptuous Grand Magnolia Suite in the corner turret, promise a serene experience under a majestic dome.

In autumn, the private wellness facilities will open their doors with jacuzzi, sauna and relaxation area, inviting guests to escape from everyday life for total relaxation.

Exceptional gastronomy in the Ancienne Salle du Conseil

The Grand Foyer, a welcoming lounge bar, offers refreshing aperitifs and local digestifs. The second floor will soon house a chic restaurant in the former Council Chamber, with its high ceilings and retro-chic decor. Right from the opening, this unique setting will serve a sumptuous breakfast, as well as refined lunches and dinners, for hotel guests and outside visitors alike.

Brussels, the heart of Europe, is a jewel of artistic expression and cultural heritage. Its cobbled streets lined with historic buildings bear witness to a rich past. The city's culinary scene, renowned for its chocolatiers, gourmet restaurants and inviting bars, is to be discovered without moderation. Among this year's must-see events, don't miss the Tapis de Fleurs on the Grand-Place (August 15-18), Brussels Design September (September 12-30), the international contemporary art fair Art of Paper (October 3-6), as well as the Winterpret Christmas market and BRAFA, one of Europe's most prestigious art fairs, early next year.

And what about sustainability?

“First, it's important to recognize that the world is not simply black or white, but rather a shade of gray. Although we still run on fossil fuels, we are striving to improve our ecological footprint.

The focus is on emissions. Our goal is zero emissions by 2050. That's why our new ships run on LNG. They emit 20% less CO2, 85% less nitrogen and 99% less sulfur. What's more, these engines can also run on non-fossil fuels without any problems, making them ready to sail emission-free in the future. Then there's the question of waste, sewage and so on. All water on board is purified before being discharged. It's filtered seawater, which we even use to brew our own beer. We can even say that our recycling rate is two to three times higher than that of the average household.

Thirdly, we have the ability to use shore power. This means we don't need to burn fuel in port, reducing our emissions when generating electricity.”

“Finally, we're talking about a program designed to make navigation as efficient as possible. In fact, a sophisticated computer program takes into account a multitude of parameters to enable us to sail around 33% more efficiently today. All this, of course, while respecting our love of the sea and nature.Did you know that we even adapt our route to avoid, for example, areas where sperm whales are present? “

Chamonix – Mont-Blanc

RECONNECTING WITH NATURE

RECONNECTING WITH NATURE

THE CITY OF CHAMONIX

This small town of 8,900 inhabitants is surrounded by the villages of Les Houches, where we set down our suitcases, and Argentière, which form an almost urban continuity with it. Chamonix is not just an Alpine ski resort, it's a complete destination in the heart of the Alps. Here, mountaineering, the art of living, shopping, culture, well-being and the contemplation of Mont-Blanc and glaciers, before they disappear, are all reasons to visit.

Chamonix offers a diversity of activities all year round, so whether it's summer, spring, winter or autumn, there's always something going on. Even in November, just before the slopes open, there's still plenty going on. Chamonix is much more than a ski resort, it's a true mountain experience, an authentic tourist rendezvous offering shops, museums, a cog railway, a cable car leading to an altitude of almost 4,000 meters, as well as a plethora of starred hotels and restaurants, and where "urban skiing" also finds its place. A must: ski down the Mer de Glace with a local guide.

MORE THAN A RESORT

Rather urban, Chamonix's architecture bears witness to its rich tourist past. Like its spa counterparts, Chamonix's art nouveau architecture is imbued with mountain codes. There are some fine palaces and buildings made of granite and local stone, all rendered in soberly colored ochre. A beautiful mountain stream runs through the commune: the Arve. This torrent descends from the Mont Blanc glaciers and flows into the Rhône some 100 km further on.

Where Alpine Adventures Soar High

In terms of downhill skiing, Chamonix offers 4 ski areas on 4 slopes, with just over 110km of marked runs, 90% of which are at altitudes above 2000m.

  • Les Houches - Prarion (1008m - 1900m): The ideal family ski area, with both accessible and technical runs, linked to Saint-Gervais by the Mont Blanc tramway. It offers sunny skiing with a beautiful view of the Chamonix valley and forest skiing for a magical atmosphere - 55 km of runs.

  • Brévent - Flégère (2,525m): The ski area facing Mont Blanc, with breathtaking panoramic views. A ski area directly accessible from the center of Chamonix or from Les Praz.

  • Argentière - Les Grands Montets (2,765m): The area for experienced skiers on groomed runs or off-piste. Much appreciated by snowboarders for the length of its runs. A high-altitude, rather technical area located between the Argentière glacier and the Mer de Glace - 28 km of runs.

  • Balme - Vallorcine: (2270m): The perfect alpine atmosphere and gentle slopes for beginners 29km

These unconnected areas are located at key points in the valley, all in exceptional surroundings. The Vallée Blanche descent is the highlight of these itineraries: from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 meters above sea level, an iconic off-piste adventure awaits skiers: the Vallée Blanche descent to the Mer de Glace. Sometimes, when snow conditions are favorable, this epic 2,800-meter descent leads all the way down to the valley, offering a 100% natural experience. Otherwise, it ends at Montenvers, accessible by cogwheel train. The technical nature of the descent varies according to snow conditions, but any skier comfortable off-piste can tackle it. However, the presence of a guide is highly recommended, as he or she knows the intricacies and dangers of the glacier, ensuring safe navigation through crevasses and potential hazards. As for cross-country skiing, there are some 50km of trails to choose from.

The Sublime’s Selection

ACCOMMODATION

Les Granges d'En Haut: Set in the heart of a preserved natural environment, this five-star hotel residence boasts 14 individual, traditional chalets, all perfectly integrated. Ideally located close to the Les Houches ski lifts, each 180 m² chalet offers four double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well as an exclusive sauna. In addition to these distinctive features, the complex offers a sumptuous spa and refined restaurant to complete the guest experience.

LES GRANGES D’EN HAUT

APÉRO AT ROSE DU PONT

Once upon a time, there was an all-pink house sitting opposite Her Majesty Mont Blanc. A magnificent establishment with a pink façade, where it's good to chat, gossip, blab, nibble, pick, have fun, contemplate and dream over a good 'Citron chaud'.

his building is often associated with the legend that its facade is the result of the dismantling of a building exhibited at a World's Fair, perhaps in Paris, Interlaken or Brussels. No documents to date confirm this story, but the building nevertheless bears witness to a flourishing period in Chamonix, known as the Belle-Époque. In any case, it is a symbol of Chamonix's growing urbanization.

ROSE DU PONT

HIGH ALTITUDE DINING

Come on over and ask for Serge Sozonoff at les Vieills Luges, who is now at the helm of this superb alpine farmhouse, transformed into a high-altitude restaurant nestled along the slopes of Les Houches. Les vieilles Luges is well worth a visit, and we recommend snowshoeing for night excursions (on request). We recommend the 'Pecan Pie', just crazy.

LES VIEILLES LUGES

AFTER SKI

The Hotel 'La Folie Douce', housed in the former 'Club Med' in Chamonix, is the place to go for a drink, where all generations meet in a friendly, free atmosphere in an exceptional, festive setting at the foot of Mont Blanc.

A place bursting with life, where all generations come together in freedom and conviviality, where authenticity is the watchword and the starting point for unique moments. In an exceptional setting, at the foot of Mont-Blanc, the spirit of La Folie Douce Hotels sets the pace for all your days, evenings and nights.

To enter the evening as if into a dance, there are the strolls. Here, the show isn't just on the set, it's alive. Broadway-style strolls between the tables, aerial shows and live music punctuate the end of each day.

As part of the centenary of the first Winter Olympics, this exhibition offers an in-depth look at the organization and staging of this event. Discover how Chamonix-Mont-Blanc played a part in the invention of the Olympic Winter Games!

A highlight not to be missed in the centenary year of the first Winter Olympics is the exhibition at the Maison de la mémoire et du patrimoine Jany Couttet, entitled "Chamonix 1924: l'invention des Jeux Olympiques d'hiver" (Chamonix 1924: the invention of the Winter Olympics). Through a series of photographic and film archives, as well as objects from the era such as athletes' outfits, this exhibition offers a real plunge into history, and in this case, into this Olympic week. It runs until March 15, 2025.

Lunch on the slopes

La Bergerie de Planpraz is Located on the Brévent ski area (2000m), this is a pleasure for the eyes and for the taste buds, and we're happy to give it a 10/10 rating. The fully renovated premises offer a culinary experience and impeccable service that are all too rare at altitude.

The interior of this beautiful wooden chalet has been completely renovated by Maison des Drus to create a warm and friendly atmosphere.

The two communicating rooms around the wood-burning fireplace create a lovely atmosphere. The terrace has also been redesigned for added comfort.

In terms of cuisine, you'll find a top-of-the-range brasserie with a Savoy and Italian flavour. You'll enjoy wood-fired cooking based on local produce.

The varied menu offers something for everyone: meat, fish, vegetarian dishes and tasty pastries.

Your lunch will take on a whole new dimension in front of the Aiguille du Midi and Mont Blanc. The restaurant combines local flavors with traditional French cuisine.

La Bergerie is easily accessible by gondola (10-minute ascent). The descent, with its view of Chamonix, will be an excellent souvenir for your group.

Maison Gainsbourg

LE MUSÉE

LE MUSÉE

The Legacy

A new cultural institution, Maison Gainsbourg, has recently opened its doors on Rue de Verneuil in Paris. This institution is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the iconic French singer, songwriter, actor, and provocateur, Serge Gainsbourg. Gainsbourg, who left an indelible mark on French pop culture, resided at 5 bis Rue de Verneuil from May 1969 until his passing in 1991. His daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, has meticulously preserved every aspect of the house and its contents, offering the public a unique experience that sheds new light on his work.

Maison Gainsbourg comprises two distinct locations. The first is the historic house at 5 bis Rue de Verneuil, where Serge Gainsbourg lived for over two decades. The second site, located across the street at 14 Rue Verneuil, houses a museum chronicling the artist's life and career, a boutique bookstore, and Gainsbarre, a café and piano bar for visitors to extend their visit. Maison Gainsbourg offers two tour options: a combined 'House & Museum' tour lasting approximately 1.5 hours and a 'Museum only' tour lasting about 1 hour. Charlotte and her team anticipate hosting nearly 100,000 visitors annually and have planned various on-site, digital, and off-site programs.

A Musical Journey from Yé-Yé to Iconoclast

Serge Gainsbourg, born in 1928 to Russian Jewish immigrants, started his artistic journey as a musician and painter in 1958, transitioning into a singing career. He achieved recognition initially but later faced competition from the yé-yé movement, prompting a shift to composing for others. Throughout his career, he struggled to define his unique style, but his romance with Brigitte Bardot in 1967 led to iconic songs like 'Je t’aime… moi non plus.' In the 1970s, he experimented with avant-garde albums before attaining broad success at 51 with his reggae adaptation of the national anthem.

Known for his controversial television appearances, Gainsbourg cultivated a provocative image, reserving his most daring songs for himself. Despite becoming a legend, he succumbed to his excesses and passed away in 1991.

5 bis Rue de Verneuil, Gainsbourg's former home and workspace, has been preserved by Charlotte Gainsbourg along with its contents for over three decades. Visitors equipped with geo-located headphones can explore the house while listening to an original soundtrack created by Soundwalk Collective, featuring audio archives and Charlotte's anecdotes about her father. The tour takes visitors through various rooms, including the famous ground-floor living room with its distinctive black felt walls and white marble floor.

A Musical Odyssey Through Art and History

At 14 Rue de Verneuil, Maison Gainsbourg offers a hybrid space with a museum, a boutique bookstore, and Gainsbarre, which serves as both a café and a piano bar. The museum's permanent exhibit, lasting approximately one hour, delves into Serge Gainsbourg's life through eight chronological chapters, featuring nearly 450 original objects, manuscripts, artwork, clothing, and jewelry from his collection. The Maison Gainsbourg collection contains around 25,000 references, including significant works like Claude Lalanne's 'L’Homme à Tête de Chou' and Salvador Dalí's 'La Chasse aux Papillons.' The museum also houses an extensive documentary collection with over 3,000 manuscripts, a press archive, and a photographic archive.

Visitors can choose between two tour options: a combined 'House & Museum' tour or a 'Museum only' tour. The former offers an intimate exploration of Gainsbourg's childhood home narrated by Charlotte, followed by access to the museum, while the latter provides a comprehensive one-hour tour of the museum, including a video tour and thematic temporary exhibitions.

WHERE MINIMALIST LUXURY MEETS NATURAL BEAUTY

WHERE MINIMALIST LUXURY MEETS NATURAL BEAUTY

Photography by Francisco Nogueira

Alentejo's Hidden Gem

Nestled in the heart of Portugal's Alentejo region lies an idyllic haven, cherished by local holidaymakers in search of tranquil moments amidst sprawling vineyards, cork farms, enchanting hamlets, and vast, unspoiled beaches that seem to stretch on endlessly. Alentejo's unhurried ambiance has also ensnared the hearts of slow travel aficionados, those seeking an alternative to the bustling Algarve. Yet, one might argue it's almost too popular, judging by the luxurious hotels, stylish villas, and chic beach clubs that have sprouted up in the past decade around the charming town of Comporta. Fortunately, for the discerning traveler, Alentejo still retains its serene, unspoiled essence, providing a seamless escape from the frenetic pace of daily life, a place where one can surrender to the allure of simplicity. This is the very essence that hoteliers Sofia and Miguel Charters of Primosfera envisioned when they conceived "Pa.te.os," a collection of four distinct holiday houses nestled near the picturesque village of Melides.

Concrete Oasis

Conceived as quintessential homes away from home, these concrete dwellings, artfully designed by renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, are strategically positioned between the pastoral countryside and the beckoning shoreline. These houses, featuring a series of picturesque courtyards or "pátios" in Portuguese, which lend their name to the project, seamlessly blend privacy with an intimate connection to the surrounding landscape. Here, a symphony of pine forests, olive groves, and vineyards harmoniously coexist with the grandeur of the Atlantic Ocean. While exuding stark minimalism in architecture and embracing a soothingly ascetic aesthetic, an inviting warmth permeates thanks to the artisanal craftsmanship of local carpenters, stucco artisans, and stonemasons, as well as personal flourishes like carefully curated artworks and handpicked books, all selected with care by the owners themselves. Whether one gazes through the thoughtfully framed vistas of the surrounding nature from within or beholds the sweeping ocean panoramas from the communal swimming pool that seems to hover above the coastal expanse, "Pa.te.os" revels in the untamed beauty of Alentejo while nurturing an atmosphere of tranquility and contemplation.

Bridging Past and Present

Courtyards, deeply rooted in the region's architectural heritage dating back to the Romans and Arabs, serve multifaceted purposes. They shield from the relentless sun, promote natural cooling, and enhance the microclimate of the property. In rural settings, courtyards serve as the bridge between the interior and the majesty of nature itself. Thus, it was imperative for Sofia and Miguel to incorporate these elements into the houses' design while infusing a contemporary sensibility that reflects their modern vision of hospitality.

In response to this, Mateus applied a minimalist architectural vocabulary characterized by clean lines and elegant geometric forms. He conceived four identical, house-shaped concrete enclosures, each housing a unique arrangement of indoor and outdoor spaces. These properties are oriented in different directions to ensure uninterrupted panoramas, with a triangular infinity pool at the epicenter. The result? Angular volumes that form a series of sculptural installations, mirroring the undulating landscape—an architectural testament, as Mateus describes it, to "ruins lost in time."

Serenity and Simplicity

Whether a one-bedroom retreat or a more spacious three-bedroom haven, all four properties share an intimate connection between the natural and the human-made. They achieve this through meticulously framed vistas, artisanal natural materials, and expansive glass patio doors that, when open, seamlessly erase the boundary between interior and exterior.

Rooted in a muted palette of earthy tones, the interiors echo the minimalist architectural ethos with a blend of cast concrete, untouched plaster, and natural oak finishes. Scandinavian and Italian furnishings maintain the unadorned elegance. "With no hidden tricks," Sofia and Miguel emphasize, "Pa.te.os" embraces the authenticity of materials without compromising comfort and functionality. The soulful simplicity of the interiors mirrors the owners' appreciation for life's uncomplicated pleasures, as evident in the chosen artworks: petite kinetic sculptures adorn the bedrooms, while Portuguese artist Olga Sanina created four large paintings, one for each living room, using foliage collected from the property.

Complementing the meticulously designed serenity of "Pa.te.os" are indoor wood-burning stoves and al fresco showers, underscoring the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Additional amenities such as freshly prepared breakfasts, a curated selection of local wines, and on-demand massage treatments and yoga sessions embrace the ethos of slow living. Finally, a custom-made fragrance by British perfumer Lyn Harris completes the sensory experience, capturing the essence of Alentejo with its sea breezes and aromatic pine trees.

Ulysses Hotel Baltimore

WHERE TIME AND TRAVEL COLLIDE IN STYLE

WHERE TIME AND TRAVEL COLLIDE IN STYLE

A Timeless Tapestry of Baltimore's Quirks and Contradictions

In the realm of literary genius, James Joyce penned a timeless quote that beautifully captures the essence of the Ulysses hotel in Baltimore: "Hold to the now, the here, through which all future plunges to the past." This profound insight from Joyce's literary masterpiece, "Ulysses," serves as a fitting introduction to the narrative-driven world of Ulysses hotel, where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present.

Nestled in Baltimore's picturesque Mount Vernon neighborhood, the Ulysses hotel occupies a charming early 20th-century building amidst stately mansions. With 116 uniquely designed rooms, the hotel is a captivating tapestry woven from a rich blend of cultural references. From the elegance of Art Deco movie palaces and Victorian-era interiors to the romance of 1920s ocean liners and steam trains, and even the cinematic language of Baltimore icon John Waters, Ulysses immerses its guests in an environment that's equal parts delightfully campy and elegantly classical. It's a place that takes inspiration from Baltimore's quirks and contradictions, and it's the fourth property of the New York-based hotelier and design studio, Ash.

A Symphony of Local History, Art, and Adventure

Ash's approach to each of its hotels is a delightful symphony of local history, architecture, and the creative team's favorite films and artworks. At Ulysses, this concept manifests itself in an array of unexpected, lavish details. From an all-day café and two cocktail bars to a bespoke fragrance that fills the air, the hotel whisks guests away into a world bursting with drama, mystery, and playfulness.

The heart of Ulysses' hospitality is rooted in the idea that travel should be an adventure and a source of inspiration. This philosophy is mirrored in its name, paying homage to James Joyce's "Ulysses" and Homer's "Odyssey," two literary masterpieces that chronicle the peripatetic journeys of their protagonists. The name Ulysses also nods to the ship that carried Bavarian immigrants to Baltimore in 1838, a nod to the city's own rich history of migration.

Stepping into the hotel's ornate lobby is like entering a treasure trove of art and history. Mosaics inspired by the loggia of the Petit Palais in Paris grace the floor, alongside Baroque-style oil paintings and marble amphorae on matching marble plinths. These solemn elements set the stage for the exuberantly joyful spaces that await further exploration.

The Art Deco Splendor

The hotel's 116 guest rooms, spread across eight floors, offer a journey through time with four distinct color schemes: blush red, dark lemon, moss green, and teal blue. Each room oozes Art Deco charm, featuring four-poster beds with scalloped canopies, claw-foot bathtubs, and amphorae-shaped mirrors framed in burled wood. Playful touches include custom textiles with flamingo patterns, flamingo-shaped bedside tables inspired by John Waters's "Pink Flamingo" film, and handmade quilts inspired by Baltimore Album Quilts from the 19th century. Guests can decipher the quilts' invented visual language with the help of the hotel's daily newsletter. Every element in the rooms, from hand-beaded lampshades from Jaipur to custom-made bath products with fragrances of damask rose, nutmeg, carrot seed, and amber spice, is meticulously thought out, reflecting Ash's commitment to detail.

Art Deco aesthetics also shine in the Ash—Bar, an all-day café and bistro with a Continental menu. Inspired by the opulence of 1920s and 1930s ocean liners and steam train cars, the space features glossy burled wood paneling, rattan chairs, and embroidered red upholstery that transport guests to an era of languid cruising and European café culture.

Bloom's, the hotel's cocktail lounge, takes its name from Joyce's iconic protagonist and draws inspiration from 1920s cabarets and 1970s and early 1980s discos, reflecting Baltimore's vibrant nightlife. Mirrors, both on the central bar counter and covering walls and ceilings, create a seductive ambiance. The space is furnished with channel-tufted pink banquettes, fringed stools in purple velvet, and blood-red curtains hand-beaded in India—a captivating blend that could easily serve as a John Waters film set.

Adding to the hotel's eclectic charm is The Coral Wig, a tropical cocktail bar that channels the ambiance of 1980s-era Manila. With green velvet banquettes, hand-painted checkered flooring, amber stained glass, and a black walnut bar, it offers guests a unique escape. The bar is the creation of bartender and entrepreneur Lane Harlan and musician Matthew Pierce, known for redefining Baltimore's drinking scene. Their tropical-themed menu, featuring cocktails like the "Banana Hammock," "Manila Daquiri," and "Pray for Rain," alongside classics, is a testament to their diverse backgrounds and global inspirations. The presence of John Waters as a regular at Harlan and Pierce's venues adds an exciting element, giving Ulysses' guests the possibility of a chance encounter with the legendary filmmaker.

In a city known for its history, quirkiness, and vibrant arts scene, Ulysses hotel stands as a testament to Baltimore's unique character. With its blend of past and present, creativity and history, it offers guests an unforgettable journey through time and style—a true ode to the spirit of exploration and adventure that travel represents.

The exhibition, titled "SEIT 1898," which translates from German to mean 'Since 1898,' pays homage to the legendary brand's origins in Cologne, Germany, 125 years ago. Over the years, RIMOWA's luggage has evolved into an iconic symbol of adventure, luxury, and craftsmanship, instantly recognizable by its signature anodized grooved aluminum body. Just as travel has rapidly transformed over the past century, RIMOWA's cases have continually adapted, taking on new forms and functions with each generation. Visitors to "SEIT 1898" are invited to explore the history of travel, culture, and technology through the retrospective featuring over 100 RIMOWA cases.

Coinciding with New York Fashion Week, "SEIT 1898" will be open to the public at Chelsea Factory, located at 547 W 26th Street, from September 8th to September 17th, 2023.

Discover the legacy of rimowa

At the SEIT 1898 New York exhibition, RIMOWA highlights a thoughtfully curated selection from its vast archive to uncover its rich history. Each diorama frames a moment from the brand’s past which has played a defining role in shaping its identity. This journey through time meanders through the expansive industrial space at Chelsea Factory and highlights the materials, locations, individuals, style trends, and craftsmanship that have together contributed to the brand‘s legacy. Establishing a foundation for the show, the iconic RIMOWA Cabin is ‘exploded’ in mid-air, exposing the clean skeleton of the classic case in suspended, observable detail.

reading the history of travel through 100 cases

RIMOWA’s 125th anniversary exhibition SEIT 1898 falls at a moment in time when the world is rekindling its love for travel — and redefining a modern lifestyle based on remote working and living. This current era marks another major turning point in the ever-changing timeline of what it means to move. What’s more, global travel is perhaps more accessible than ever in the 21st century. The show lays out a series of scenes which unfold glimpses into the past, as unique cases are displayed as both artifacts of our collective heritage, and reminders of once-new technologies.

A unique RIMOWA case that had traveled through Ellis Island has been preserved, and will be on view at SEIT 1898 — a meaningful artifact for New Yorkers. With its dents and scars, the case is shown as a reminder of immigrant struggles, especially during the tumultuous 20th century, while emphasizing the brand’s quality and resilience even from its earliest years.

Within the dioramas of RIMOWA's New York exhibition, attendees will encounter captivating collaborations and rare glimpses into the personal cases of notable figures such as Billie Eilish, Martha Stewart, Roger Federer, Patti Smith, and Spike Lee. Alongside these privately-owned cases, "SEIT 1898" showcases brand partnerships with iconic names like Off-White and Dior, as well as artifacts from pop culture, including the briefcase from 'Mission Impossible IV.' The collection also boasts purpose-built creations, spanning from poker sets to cigar cases, and even Stradivarius violin cases. Notable milestones in the brand's evolution, such as the introduction of the iconic grooves in luggage design in 1950, are highlighted.

Collectively, this thoughtfully curated selection offers a comprehensive exploration of RIMOWA's significant contributions to the ever-evolving realm of travel culture, spanning from the late 19th century to the present day.

Dan Carter expressed his sentiments about the trunk, stating, "On the occasion of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, we wanted to create a truly exceptional item. This Malle Vestiaire holds all the memorabilia that symbolizes the incredible memories I've gathered from my professional rugby career, while also paying homage to Louis Vuitton's renowned Art of Travel. I can't imagine a more fitting way for these treasures to be showcased than in this exquisite trunk."

LE GRAND MAZARIN

MAISON PARIENTE WELCOMES A NEW MEMBER INTO THE FAMILY

Maison Pariente welcomes a new member into the family

Maisons Pariente represents an exclusive range of contemporary 5-star hotels, founded by Patrick Pariente and his two daughters, Leslie Kouhana and Kimberley Cohen. These exceptional establishments are ideally located and designed to offer the experience of an elegant private residence, each with its own unique and artistic personality.

The collection consists of four hotels: Crillon le Brave in Provence, Lou Pinet in Saint-Tropez, Le Coucou in Méribel and Le Grand Mazarin in Paris, due to open in 2023.

ECLECTIC AND VIBRANT

Maisons Pariente has selected a district adored by Parisians and travellers from all over the world alike: the Marais. A unique new address offering a luxurious oasis of serenity in the heart of the bustle. A charming and unexpected place.

All the elements have been brought together to make the Grand Mazarin the place to be for an unparalleled Parisian experience, at any time of day: a delightful restaurant with non-stop service, a surprising bar where every evening is a new experience, an extraordinary swimming pool and excellent service that is both attentive and warm. In this magnificent 5-star hotel, the Maisons Pariente spirit is embodied in a simple, generous vision of Parisian luxury.

Elegance Signed By

Martin Brudnizki

The decor of the Grand Mazarin is both inspired and elegant, designed by internationally renowned Swedish interior architect Martin Brudnizki and his London-based design studio MBDS. The hotel is a refined take on French classicism with a modern twist. In its 61 rooms, including 11 suites, this 5-star hotel in the Marais district of Paris skilfully plays with contrasts to create a grandiose universe that is both whimsical and delightfully warm.

"I love the concept of the literary salons of yesteryear, which was one of my main sources of inspiration when designing Le Grand Mazarin. We wanted the hotel to feel as if it had always been part of the Marais landscape. We were therefore inspired by the grand residences of the aristocratic era, where leading figures in literature, art and music would gather in sumptuous residences to indulge in the pleasures of conversation and letters. Our concept for the Grand Mazarin was to revive this atmosphere and adapt it to contemporary times, giving our guests the feeling of being at home and the freedom to express themselves".

This architectural concept is enhanced by the craftsmanship of Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant.

50 Rooms & 11 Suites

As soon as you step through the hotel door, the contrast is striking... In the heart of this bustling district, day and night, the rooms and suites of the Grand Mazarin offer you the rare privilege of being both at the heart of the action and perfectly preserved from the surrounding hustle and bustle. Their opulent decor skilfully blends classic French tradition with a bold artistic vision, with a strong preference for colour and cosy comfort worthy of a 5-star hotel in Paris. It's a bubble of gentle serenity that you'll be delighted to return to after exploring the shops and art galleries of Paris.

BOUBALÉ, THE 5-STAR HOTEL RESTAURANT COMBINING LUXURY AND GASTRONOMY IN PARIS

Nestled in Maisons Pariente's Hôtel Grand Mazarin, at the intersection of rue des Archives and rue de la Verrerie, Boubalé embodies the spirit of the neighbourhood. Elusive, unclassifiable, free. It's a multi-faceted, eclectic place that speaks to the heart, soul and senses. Divinely soothing in its intimate winter garden, and epicurean in the restaurant, where Michelin-starred chef Assaf Granit pays tribute to the Eastern European cuisine passed down by his grandmother, known as "boubalé" in Yiddish. A little-known cuisine that he reinvents with inspired creativity, making it more gourmet and desirable than ever. Assaf Granit takes up the challenge of restoring Ashkenazi cuisine to its rightful place as a culinary masterpiece.

THE ESSENCE OF A DISTRICT

Just a few steps from the Hôtel de Ville, close to the Seine, at the intersection of rue de la Verrerie and rue des Archives, Le Grand Mazarin, cheerful, elegant and flamboyant, invites you to enjoy an intense experience of Paris. In this emblematic old Paris, getting lost in the streets is an endless promise of charming surprises and unusual discoveries. The Marais, both visionary and cosmopolitan, has spanned the centuries to become the epicentre of new trends. It's a lively, avant-garde district, brimming with creativity and vibrant day and night.

Le Grand Mazarin combines all the elements needed to become the must-visit destination for a unique Parisian experience, at any time of day. You'll find a delightful restaurant open all day, a surprising bar where every evening is a new adventure, an extraordinary swimming pool and excellent service, never pretentious but always attentive. The spirit of Maison Pariente is expressed through a simple and generous vision of Parisian luxury.

Floyd, a brand founded in 2019, is revolutionizing travel accessories with its distinctive style and innovative hard-top cases. Inspired by California's 70s skateboard culture, their sleek travel companions embody individuality and creativity. They have quickly gained popularity among diverse travelers, offering a refreshing escape from the mundane travel world. The brand draws inspiration from the vibrant bohemian spirit of Venice Beach in the early 1970s, where resourceful surfers took to the streets with their skateboards when water supplies were cut off during a scorching summer. The introduction of revolutionary skateboard polyurethane wheels in 1973 became a pivotal moment, allowing them to transfer their surfing style onto the asphalt. This marked the birth of a global skateboarding revolution. The spirit of Venice Beach during this era has become an everlasting source of inspiration for Floyd, infusing their travel cases with a timeless sense of freedom and adventure.

From "Dogtown" to Munich's Suburbs

While the Venice Beach revolution unfolded, thousands of miles away, two teenagers from Munich found themselves drawn to the allure of Californian lifestyle. Bernd Georgi and Horst Kern were mesmerized by skateboarding culture and devoured American skate magazines while tearing through the streets of their own suburban neighborhoods on their skateboards. Although they never had the chance to experience the golden era of skateboarding firsthand, their careers in the fashion industry took them on exciting journeys across the globe, from South Africa to Hong Kong.

In 1996, these two enterprising individuals established their own company, crafting high-quality accessories and luggage for renowned brands worldwide. Decades later, their expertise in luggage production brought them back to their roots, where they found inspiration from their youthful dreams. Floyd was born, paying homage to the free-spirited and bohemian essence of the 70s, and the exuberant design language that defined Venice Beach during that era.

Bringing Back the Mojo

Floyd's travel cases exude a sense of "mojo," channeling the zeitgeist of a bygone era into the modern traveler's world. The brand's offbeat and stylish travel companions are a tribute to the carefree spirit and creativity of the 70s, reimagined for today's adventurers seeking a unique experience. Bernd Georgi and Horst Kern's dream of designing travel cases that echo their teenage aspirations has become a reality through Floyd, inspiring travelers to keep rolling with style and passion.

In conclusion, Floyd is much more than a brand; it is a cultural revival, bringing back the essence of Venice Beach bohemia and the golden era of skateboarding. Through their distinctive and innovative travel cases, Floyd breathes new life into modern travel, infusing it with the spirit of adventure, individuality, and boundless imagination. So, for those seeking to recapture the magic of yesteryears while exploring the world, Floyd is the key to unlocking the mojo of unforgettable journeys.

CASA A CORTE

A luxury residence in Puglia

A luxury residence in Puglia

A Unique Collection

AS Luxury Places is a curated collection of exceptional homes, with Casa a Corte being its inaugural property situated in the picturesque historical center of Nardò, Puglia. Anne and Sylvain, who both have a shared passion for the hotel industry, have established their own guest house after a successful career working for renowned luxury hotel brands. Their vision for Casa a Corte was to create an authentic Italian retreat that embodies the essence of luxurious yet genuine hospitality, warmly welcoming friends and travelers from around the globe. Owning a small house in Italy has always been their cherished dream, where they can cultivate a convivial and joyful atmosphere to share their passion for the art of hosting. With Anne and Sylvain's extensive background in the luxury hotel sector, AS Luxury Places carefully curates unique properties, of which Casa a Corte proudly stands as the first among these exclusive residences. Nestled in the captivating historic heart of Nardò, this remarkable destination represents the realization of their secret dream.

From fashion queen Anna Wintour to Nardò

Anne Benichou has bought a house in the small town in the province of Lecce and turned it into a luxury residence. Ms Benichou's career began at Vogue, or rather Condé Nast: first an internship at Vogue Spain in 1999, then in the offices of Vogue Italia, and finally in the Paris offices of Vogue America and Anna Wintour. The next step took her to the Ritz, where it was Wintour herself - who stays there during fashion week - who introduced her to the editor-in-chief.

Instead of denaturing the interior, they enhanced it, developed a restoration that lasted a few years, kept the baroque bed, the limestone friezes and Mrs Gina's rosaries, as well as the authentic floors.

The atmosphere of the place was already there; the couple have simply enriched it with antique furniture, sheets and homemade soaps. They are masters of refinement, Bénichou and Grenier, after all. And she has an impressive CV: before arriving at the Ritz in Paris, where she was Director of Communications and External Relations, she worked alongside Anna Wintour, the undisputed ruler of world fashion.

When you stay at Casa a Corte, you are invited to relax and feel at home. The house offers its guests the best experience for a perfect holiday in beautiful surroundings. With five spacious bedrooms, including two superb large bedrooms, each with its own unique style, the house can accommodate up to ten people. There is also a generous living room and a fully equipped kitchen that open onto a private courtyard and a charming swimming pool where you can relax under the orange trees.

When authenticity rhymes with rarity

Casa a Corte has preserved its original essence and authentic character as one of the oldest residences in Nardò, dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Ancient stone carvings have been discovered and carefully preserved, adding a special touch to its charm.

A delightful invitation to life in Puglia

Nardò is a charming Italian town where magic happens around every corner. A trip to Puglia allows you to enjoy both the wild waters of the Adriatic and the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. At Casa a Corte, you'll enjoy an authentic, luxurious holiday, where the gentle way of life is a philosophy and you can fully enjoy the dolce vita.

"The special feature of the house is certainly its authenticity: it dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries and is one of the oldest in Nardò. Ancient stone carvings have been uncovered and carefully preserved". There is also a 'generous' living room and a fully equipped kitchen, but Anne and Sylvain can provide a chef on request. Their intention is above all to offer a relaxing holiday "with those we love", whether devoted to discovering the beauties of the region or simply "doing nothing".

From yoga classes using Heberson's Vibhava Yoga method, to climbing the via ferrata (a variation on rock-climbing), to walks, the E-bike, which gave me a feeling of freedom and adrenalin, which added a touch of excitement to my stay, and finally the exploration of the La Grand Motte glacier thanks to the Perce-neige funicular. We spent over three hours climbing the heart of the mountain to reach the summit of the glacier at 3456 metres. The breathtaking panoramic view we were treated to was simply breathtaking. Contemplating the majesty of the mountains from this height gave me a sense of wonder and a deep connection with nature. After so much effort, we recommend that you enjoy some well-deserved relaxation at the Cinq Mondes Spa. I was able to discover new passions, push my limits and reconnect with the surrounding nature. This magical place offered us moments of escape and rejuvenation that we'll remember for a long time.
